Staying Salty & Lit: Why Electrolytes Matter This Summer
As the days grow longer and the sun burns brighter, many of us feel the nudge to get outside, soak up the warmth, and move our bodies! But with all the sweating, sun, and activity, there’s one critical ingredient we can’t afford to overlook: electrolytes.
Hydration isn’t just about drinking enough water — it’s about keeping our body’s natural electrical system running smoothly (yep – I’m talking about electricity!). And with June ushering in the hotter days here in Georgia, it’s the perfect time to talk about why electrolytes matter, how they support your body, and how we can replenish them in the cleanest, most effective way.
What Are Electrolytes, Really?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and play a key role in keeping your body functioning properly. The main ones you’ve probably heard of — sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium — help regulate:
- Muscle contractions (including your heart)
- Nerve signaling
- Fluid balance
- pH levels
- Energy production
Think of electrolytes like tiny messengers that help cells “talk” to each other. Without them, your muscles cramp, your energy dips, and your brain fogs over. That post-workout fatigue or afternoon slump? It could be a blood sugar drop, like we have talked about in posts before — or it might be an electrolyte imbalance.
But Isn’t Sodium… Bad?
Let’s clear something up.
The sodium that we associate with bloating, processed foods, and fast food meals is NOT the same sodium your body needs for optimal function.
Most processed table salt is stripped of its natural minerals and combined with additives. In contrast, the sodium in electrolyte blends or mineral-rich salts (like sea salt or Himalayan salt) is paired with other trace minerals that support hydration, muscle function, and even cognitive clarity.
So no — not all sodium is “bad.” In fact, when it comes to hydration and heat, sodium is essential. It helps your body hold onto the water you drink and deliver it to your cells where it’s actually needed!
Your Body is Electric
This part always fascinates people — your body literally runs on electricity.
Your brain sends electrical signals through your nervous system to communicate with muscles and organs. Your heartbeat is regulated by electrical pulses! Even your thoughts and mood are influenced by the electrical balance of your brain and cells.
That electricity is only possible with electrolytes.
No minerals = no signal.
In other words, hydration isn’t just about quenching thirst — it’s about keeping your entire system in sync.

Signs You Might Be Low on Electrolytes
Especially in the summer heat, low electrolytes can sneak up on you. You may notice:
- Headaches
- Muscle cramps or spasms
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fatigue
- Brain fog or irritability
- A “wired but tired” feeling
And unfortunately, plain water often isn’t enough. If you’re sweating, exercising, or simply outdoors a lot, you’re losing not just water but minerals, too.

Staying Salty & Lit: A Spiritual Reflection
At my core, I believe wellness is more than what you eat or drink — it’s also about how you live and who you’re becoming.
While we are talking about brighter and hotter summer days and saltier water to keep us going, “salt and light” can go even deeper in nourishment.
In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus says:

To take it a step deeper, in Luke 14:34-35 it is written,
“Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away.”
Salt, in biblical times and today, is used to preserve and purify. Light illuminates and guides.
In calling us to be the “salt of the world,” Jesus was not only hinting at taste and preservation, but at His followers being agents of growth. If believers are the world’s fertilizer, we are meant to connect and love people everywhere we go. He is calling us to not accumulate our own accomplishments, but to enhance the lives of those around us. We are called to help fertilize other people’s soil so that they may bear fruit – to rise, succeed, and gain in the Holy Spirit’s gifts. To seek their fruit more than our own.
When you go out and serve someone who can do nothing for you back, you go from nurturing one single seed with your salt and light, to nourishing one seed that then grows into an entire garden that will feed and nurture generations to come. All by using the gifts the Lord has given YOU (the salt, a messenger) specifically to do His work of love.
Just like your body needs minerals to function, the world needs your truth, your joy, your compassion — to function well. When you’re hydrated, nourished, and grounded, you’re better able to show up for others as salt and light in a world that desperately needs it.
Closing Thoughts
As the Georgia heat rolls in this summer, don’t just reach for any old sports drink or sugar-packed energy mix. Choose clean, functional hydration that works with your body — and supports your spirit too.
Next time you swing by Eden, grab a bottle of hydration water to-go. And wherever summer takes you,
stay salty, stay lit.
